You.
Are.
Beautiful.
Sweet K climbed up on the stool at the bathroom counter. As she brushed her teeth, I combed her soft sweet hair. I leaned down and whispered in her ear ... "You are beautiful." Her smile lit up the room.
Little M swoops in for a quick snuggle somewhere between playing dolls and puzzles. I squeeze her back, smelling her freshly bathed hair. "You are beautiful."
For now, their definition of beauty is simple, sweet. It is unaffected by the world's warped views, where exterior is the only point of worth. Somehow, they sense, it is inner and outer, character and feature. It is something they feel and it is also in the eye of the beholder.
As they grow older, I hope I can pass along the value of beauty to them. To show them it is different than the world around them screams it should be.
Until then we practice every day...
You.
Are.
Beautiful.
To me.

Every time I say those same words to my sweet little beauties, I am reminded of how much I wanted to hear them when I was little . . . and didn't. That, along with "I love you." Words that cannot be said enough, in my opinion. Thanks for the reminder!
Thank you for this lovely post and the reminder.
Guess what? Mommies need to hear it too. You are beautiful and the words that you write here about your girls prove that it isn't only skin deep :)
amen!!!! and they are as is their mama.
man i hope you can really get that through to them. the value of beauty. i wrote a post a while back. and realize just how cynical i've gotten when it comes to that particular topic...
say it often. say it loud. make sure they know.
oh, this is julia by the way. lol
Oh my.. this post of yours has had me tearing up! I continually say the same words to Janessa. It is important to me that she knows how precious and valued she is to us not only us as her parents, but to me as her Mom. Like Chantelle said in her comment that she wanted so badly to hear those words spoken to her and didn't, nor did I. I had nobody tell me I was beautiful until I was 19. That's a long time. That's why it is so important to me to make sure that Janessa knows that I love her and that she is beautiful! She answers back with 'No Mommy, I'm a girl'! :) Cute! For the last few months she reassures for me what I tell her every chance I get - that I am beautiful. In her innocent little cuteness, she comes to me out of the blue and tells me I'm pretty or that I'm beautiful and gives me a kiss. Then people wonder why I cry so much! :) Anyway, thanks for sharing ladies.. much appreciated!
